Director/Animator, Michael Cusack who had his latest film After all (2016) in the running for Best Short Film at Annecy, took some time out of his busy festival week to chat with us about his nearly 40 years career, starting a studio in Adelaide, the future of stop-motion and what it takes to become a successful Animator.
Michael and business partner Richard Chataway started the company Anifex in 1985, after meeting at teachers’ college during the mid-1970s. Fast forward 30 years and Anifex is now the largest stop-motion film company in Australia, having created some of the most iconic and long-running ads on Australian television and across Asia. Think of dogs going whacko for Schmackos and you’ll start to notice their work popping up everywhere.
Being a busy commercial house hasn’t stopped the pair from working on their own content, with a number of award winning short films such as Sleight of hand (2012) squeezing in between their many commercial jobs.
So sit back, grab a cuppa and enjoy our chat with stop-motion Maestro, Michael Cusack!
